STAFFORDSHIRE, ENGLAND [UK] — Alton Towers finally decided to retire the Corkscrew. Built on April 4, 1980, it was Europe's first double-looped roller coaster. The ride cost approximately £1.25 million to build, reached speeds of 44mph (70 km/hr) and has carried nearly 43 million people in its nearly-three decades of operation. Management decided that the space currently occupied can be used for a newer ride. Alton Towers will shut its gates for the season. However you can get to ride one more time for a special event for coaster enthusiasts on November 9.
